Alternative and complementary Medicine

It is the term for medical products and practices that are not part of standard care. Standard care is what medical doctors, doctors of osteopathy, and allied health professionals, such as nurses and physical therapists, practice. Alternative medicine is used in place of standard medical care. An example is treating heart disease with chelation therapy (which seeks to remove excess metals from the blood) instead of using a standard approach. Examples of alternative practices include homeopathy, traditional medicine, chiropractic, and acupuncture.

Complementary medicine is different from alternative medicine.

Some profesional of medicine  think that  it's necessary the  tradicional and  alternative or complementary medicine  must be used together

Acupuncture, is a treatment based on traditional Chinese medicine. Traditional Chinese acupuncture usually is done by putting very thin needles into the skin at certain points on the body to produce energy flow along the body's meridians; other types of acupuncture may use heat, pressure, or mild electrical current to stimulate energy flow along these meridians.

Some people may use acupuncture to help with chronic pain, such as low back pain, neck pain, or osteoarthritis pain. It's also used to reduce or prevent headaches. Or this therapy may help manage cancer-related symptoms or side effects from cancer treatment.

In general, acupuncture is safe when done by a certified acupuncturist. A state license ensures that the acupuncturist has a certain level of training and follows certain practice guidelines, such as using sterilized needles that are disposed of after one use. In the United States, acupuncture needles are regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as therapeutic devices.

Alexander technique, teaches you to be more aware of your body, improves posture and helps you move more efficiently. It can help people with Parkinson’s to manage their symptoms and carry out everyday tasks more effectively, as well as giving people the tools for self-management and self-care.

Loretta Manson has been teaching the Alexander technique for 11 years and has a special interest in Parkinson’s. Here, she tells us more about the technique.
